Challenge News

Thank You, Austin!

On October 24 – 26, families, friends and neighbors gathered together in Austin to take part in the final event of this year's LIVESTRONG Challenge Series. As the largest event of the Series, it should come as no surprise that there was plenty of passion, camaraderie, and inspiration to go around. While our events are intended to be a celebration of the fight against cancer, we’d like to offer another round of applause and an enthusiastic “thank you” to all of our LIVESTRONG Challenge Austin participants.  Over the course of the weekend, nearly 8,000 runners, riders and volunteers collectively raised over $3.7 million (to date) while participating in a remarkable close to our 2008 Series.

Austin’s success, was part of a bigger accomplishment. Because of participant turnout and fundraising efforts in Portland, San Jose, Philadelphia, and Austin, the 2008 LIVESTRONG Challenge Series saw 17,772 participants contribute over $9.7 million to the fight against cancer! As a Foundation, we are truly blessed to have the support of such hard working and generous individuals.

2009 Registration & Seattle Date Change

During the LIVESTRONG Challenge Austin Weekend, we announced 2009 LIVESTRONG Challenge dates and locations. Based on additional discussions with the city of Seattle after our annoucement, we decided to move our event to June 21 in order to avoid competing with a similar event already planned for the original weekend.

If you are interested in participating in Seattle, or any of the 2009 LIVESTRONG Challenge cities, online event registration will open on December 1, 2008. At this time, you will be able to select your city and event as well as begin fundraising. We look forward to seeing both familiar and new faces in each of the 2009 LIVESTRONG Challenge cities.

Donation Cut-Off for 2008

If you are still receiving donations towards your 2008 Challenge account and plan on participating in our 2009 LIVESTRONG Challenge season, we ask that you register early to ensure that all donations that come in after December 1st automatically route to your 2009 account.  If you would like to allocate your payroll deductions or matching gifts that are processed after December 1st to your 2009 account, you must register by January 15th for these funds to show up in your 2009 account.

Important Dates and Details:

  • All donations received through November 30th, 2008 will count toward 2008 accounts.
  • All donations received December 1st, 2008 or later will count toward your 2009 accounts.
    • You must be registered for the 2009 Challenge by January 15, 2009 if you would like funds to show up in your 2009 account.

If you have any questions, please contact challengedonations@laf.org.

Volunteer Information

Thank you to the thousands of individuals who volunteered for the 2008 LIVESTRONG Challenge Series! Our events would not have run as smooth or been as safe and enjoyable, were it not for all of your hard work! As the new year approaches, we are looking to make the 2009 Challenge Series an even greater success than 2008. If you are interested in volunteering next year, please RFI at www.livestrongchallenge.org on December 1st. If you want to make a bigger commitment with your volunteering and be a part of a 2009 Local Organizing Committee, please contact Chris Reed at chris.reed@medalistsports.com.

Mentor Corner

The Challenge team would like to thank the 2008 LIVESTRONG Challenge Mentors for all of their hard work, effort and enthusiasm. With 12 regional mentors and four city mentors, the program was larger than ever before… and with over 1,000 Challenge participants opting in to the program, it was a clear success!

Along with registration launching on December 1st, the 2009 LIVESTRONG Challenge Mentor application will also be available. Please note that applicants must have participated in the Challenge for at least one year, must be willing to have direct email contact on a regular basis with mentees, must attend at least one Challenge event in 2009, and must communicate regularly with Challenge staff and other mentors in order to facilitate the program. Chosen applicants will be required to attend a weekend training at the LAF office in Austin in January prior to serving as a mentor for 2009.

Please be sure to visit www.livestrongchallenge.org on December 1st in order to apply for the mentor program!
