Meet Leighann Novotney -
Secondly, my life partner Robert Murphy (also on the Les Mills RPM) has lost both his mother (colon cancer) and his sister (breast) to cancer. Additionally, his father is a colon cancer survivor. SO – if it is a hereditary disease he more than likely, has the potential to one day be diagnosed. There is something comforting in knowing that my fundraising efforts could potentially be spent on saving his life…. or my own for that matter. Team Activant This is the third consecutive year that the LIVESTRONG Challenge has been selected as Activant Solutions Inc. Austin campus' official charity. 2006 was the inaugural year for TEAM ACTIVANT’s participation in the LIVESTRONG Challenge. 67 Activant employees and 126 total team members blew away their original $30,000 fundraising goal by raising over $45,000 for the event. This team did this all while honoring the memory of their co-worker and friend, Gay Simmons. The team was also honored with the 2006 Messenger Award in for recruiting the most team members. In 2007, 67 Activant employees on a team of 135 total members raised over $60,000 for the Lance Armstrong Foundation, beating their goal of $50,000. The team honored the memory of their 2006 teammate James Habiby, who passed away from cancer only four days before the 2007 ride. A Note from Henrike Hirsch, Your Region 12 Mentor
However, my love for the sport is not the primary reason that got me involved. For me the fight against cancer is personal and a matter of the heart! My life has been touched by cancer even prior to my birth. My grandma died of cancer 3 years before I was born. To contact Henrike, please send an email to Region12Mentor@lafmentor.org Thank you for participating in the LIVESTRONG Challenge and for supporting the LAF's mission to inspire and empower people affected by cancer. Be Part of the LIVESTRONG Army and Run the Disney Marathon As autumn descends, trees share with us vibrant new colors, temperatures begin to fall, and the air becomes ripe with cool breezes…and football. That’s right, ladies and gentlemen; this is the perfect time of year to organize an event with one of your local area high schools to set up a fund raising drive at one of the school’s weekly games. Games are often well attended and whether you arrange to have marshals who accept donations posted at the gates, or get the school to donate a percentage of the ticket sales or concession stand sales, you’ll likely see a good response. Also, October is wonderful weather for soccer. Youth soccer leagues are abundant in many communities and frequently involve early mornings on Saturdays and Sundays. Think about taking “refreshments” for the parents with you to the games and asking for donations along the way. Coffee and bagels are a good start, especially if your sporting complex lacks a refreshment stand. If it does have a concession stand, try asking its purveyor if he/she would like to donate some of the proceeds to your Challenge account to support the fight against cancer. Good luck and enjoy the season! |

My friend Russell (

Whenever I talk to people in Germany about the LAF, the first thing they ask is: why in the world are you involved with a cancer foundation based in the USA? Usually, they follow up on that question with the assumption that being the International Mentor is a paid position, so when I tell them that I'm volunteering, most people think I'm just plain crazy. There are two major reasons why I'm honored to be a mentor for the LIVESTRONG Challenge and why I got involved in the fight against cancer. I live in a German city that's just in love with cycling (there are more bikes than cars on our streets), and I got my first one at the age of two. Of course, I grew up watching the Tour de France each year, and seeing Lance Armstrong race and ultimately seeing the yellow bands being introduced made me curious about the Foundation.
At the Lance Armstrong Foundation, we've been championing the fight against cancer for over a decade. As our numbers and support continue to grow, we see great strides being made in this country to make cancer a national priority. For the first time, both major presidential candidates are sharing their plans to fight cancer before the election. We applaud both Senator Barack Obama and Senator John McCain for addressing the number one killer of Americans under the age of 85. As this year's election draws near, we're counting on you to "Vote Yellow". Get educated on where the candidates stand on cancer and find out what it means to Vote Yellow at
