Team Captain Kit

Congratulations LIVESTRONG Challenge Team Captains!

As the engines of the teams, Team Captains propel the entire LIVESTRONG Challenge by recruiting members and motivating them to set (and reach?) fundraising goals We applaud you for taking on this role and look forward to supporting you in the weeks to come.

Timeline & Responsibilities

Forming a Team

  • Recruit – Let your company, family and friends know you’re forming a team with an email announcement. Go to Team Tools for sample drafts.
  • Choose a name - Bad News Bears, Fantastic Forty, you get the idea. Just keep it simple for team jerseys and unique enough to use every year.
  • Register your team – Log on to www.livestrongchallenge.org.
  • Set goals – How many participants will you register and how much money will you raise?
  • Get funds matched – Have your company match team funds dollar for dollar. For assistance setting up a program, contact challengedonations@livestrong.org

Getting Started

  • Designate help - Recruit co-captains to share the load, one each for the Ride, Walk/Run and Volunteer, and set up a LIVESTRONG Committee.
  • Build excitement - Invite a LIVESTRONG Challenge coach to present at a brown bag luncheon; place articles and/or personal stories in the company newsletter and on the website; and hang LIVESTRONG Challenge posters.
  • Get sponsored – Offer vendors and clients t-shirt space in exchange for dollars.

Picking the pace up

  • Get in shape – Have the co-captains conduct weekly group trainings.
  • Order fundraising materials – Request form coming soon!
  • Keep up the enthusiasm - Post an updated roster next to Challenge Posters.List confirmed team members and fundraising amounts.
  • Create incentives and monitor donations – Announce and reward top recruiters and fundraisers with gift certificates to restaurants, retail shops, etc.

On your mark. A month away

  • Validate your roster – Have riders have met the $250 fundraising minimum?
  • Beef up your team - Runners and walkers don’t have to fundraise so many sign up at the last minute.

Get set, go! Event week

  • Remind your team - To pick up their packets and when, where and what time to meet on the day of the event.
  • Capture the moment - arrange a day-of-event team photo.
  • Celebrate - Don’t forget to plan an after-party!

Cool down

  • Show gratitude – Send thank you notes to your team and remind them to do the same for their donors.
  • Match the gifts - Follow up on matching gifts; submit any outstanding paperwork.
  • Share your team’s role in the fight – Write about the event from beginning to end complete with pictures and submit it to the company newsletter or website.
